Former Portland Trail Blazers radio play-by-play announcer Brian Wheeler died Friday morning at the age of 62.
Wheeler, known as "Wheels," was the Blazers' radio voice from 1998 to 2019.
He was well known for his energetic style that led to catchphrases such as, "BOOM-SHAKA-LAKA," often used when a Blazers player could score on a powerful dunk.
Former Blazers forward Antonio Harvey worked with Wheeler on the radio for 12 seasons.
"We're all saddened by his passing," Harvey said. "Everybody that knew him, loved him. We always wanted the best for him. He was just a great human being."
Wheeler began with the Blazers in 1998, replacing Bill Schonley.
Harvey said his most memorable moment working with Wheeler came in 2014 when they called Damian Lillard's playoff series-winning shot over the Houston Rockets at the Moda Center.
"He was amazing," Harvey said. "Probably Dame's three-point shot is his all-time greatest call."
Wheeler had been contending with health issues for several years, according to Harvey.
