Sep. 9 -- GRAND FORKS COUNTY -- A 79-year-old man was seriously injured at approximately 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, when his pickup was struck by a Peterbilt semi approximately three miles northwest of Northwood.
Charles Bachmeier, a 69-year-old man from Northwood, was traveling eastbound in the semi, coming upon a stop sign-regulated intersection, according to a press release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The 79-year-old man, who is also from Northwood and was not identified by name in the release, was driving his pickup northbound on 36th Street Northeast.
The semi entered the intersection, striking the pickup, which came to rest in the east ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection, the release said. The semi came to rest on Sixth Avenue Northeast, on the east side of the intersection.
The pickup driver was transported to the Northwood Deaconess Hospital by the Northwood Ambulance Service. He was not wearing a seat belt, the release said, and his airbags were deployed in the crash.
Bachmeier was wearing a seat belt and is reportedly uninjured. He is charged with failing to yield the right-of-way at an intersection marked with a stop sign, according to the release.
