Kasson-Mantorville Elementary School hosts 'Leap Career Day' for second graders

KASSON, Minn. - Around 150 second graders at Kasson-Mantorville Elementary School got to learn about different fields in engineering and construction. From building rockets, paper airplanes and bridges it was a wide encompassing event.

It's part of the Learning Enrichment Advancement Program (LEAP). McNeilus Steel, Benchmark, Rochester Public Works and a couple other organizations showed up to give kids hands on activities. LEAP Coordinator Ashley Kaplan says the goal of LEAP Day is so kids can have an idea on what to do in the future.

"Any opportunity we have to expose students to different career fields and get them invested in a young age so that they can take their middle school years and their high school years exploring before they choose a college or career is a good way to expose them," said Kaplan.

One second grader Maria Ydstie has been part of leap day for a few years now and she says every year she learns something different.

"Sometimes you don't get to learn about this not everyday so this is one of the only days you get to learn about it," said Ydstie.

Another second grader Noah Jasperson says one of his favorite parts of the event was learning about pipes.

"My favorite one is where we learned about pipes and how to clean water from it and we made a project about it," said Jasperson.

Today was the first day of the LEAP Day series. The school will hold four more events for kindergarteners, first graders, third graders and fourth graders.
