A wildfire burned 47 acres of woods in Cass Township before it was brought under control on Saturday, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
The fire was called in at about 8 p.m. on Friday in the area of Valley Road on mine property owned by Reading Anthracite Company, said Schuylkill County Fire Forester Jacob Novitsky.
The cause is still under investigation, but a lack of rain, dry conditions and high winds helped it to spread quickly, Novitsky said.
Schuylkill County remains under a fire advisory, meaning no one should be starting campfires, lighting fire pits or burning debris even though a burn ban has not yet been declared by the county, Novitsky said.
No one was hurt and no structures were damaged, he said.
Dozens of volunteer firefighters from local departments and several DCNR warden crews spent much of the night putting out the flames. By about 2 p.m. on Saturday the fire was under control, although crews were still on the scene putting out hotspots and monitoring it.
Fire vehicles used mine access roads and ATV trails to reach the site.
Many more acres of woods would have likely burned if it wasn't for the good work of those who responded, Novitsky said.
"They did a phenomenal job," he said. "We all worked together well."
