Bergen synagogue, school plan to make 20,000 meals for LA fire victims, other disasters

More than 200 volunteers from Kol Dorot, a Reform Jewish temple and school in Bergen County, will gather Sunday to prepare more than 20,000 meal kits for people experiencing emergencies around the world, including those dealing with the devastating California wildfires.

The event, held in conjunction with the group Rise Against Hunger, will begin at 10 a.m. at Kol Dorot's River Edge location at 385 Howland Ave. The army of volunteers is expected to include religious school students, ages 5 and up, as well as their friends, parents and relatives ranging up to senior citizens, Kol Dorot said in a statement this week.

Participants will mix and weigh meals of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a micronutrient packet. These vegetarian meals are typically given out in schools and can be supplemented with locally available food and spices when they are distributed, Kol Dorot said.

The meals will then be boxed for shipment overseas or to the Los Angeles area, depending on need.

"So much of the suffering in the world right now, from the war in Israel to the fires on the West Coast, makes us feel powerless," Rabbi Noah Fabricant said. "This project allows us to see and feel -- literally to 'weigh out' -- the tremendous potential the community has to help people."

Rise Against Hunger is "one of very few opportunities for a 4-year-old and a 94-year-old to truly work side-by-side to do a mitzvah -- fulfilling our obligation to feed the hungry," he added.

The meals contain micronutrients targeted to address deficiencies -- such as iodine, iron and vitamin A -- in the areas where they will be distributed.

The packaging is expected to be over by noon. Those interested in taking part can contact Rabbi Jim Stoloff of Kol Dorot at [email protected] or (201) 664-7422.
