Pointers football prepares for return of 'Pink Game for Charity'

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - The UW-Stevens Point football team will play their first home game of the season on Saturday. It will also be the return of a tradition. The Pointers will play their annual 'Pink Game for Charity' against Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, a tradition aimed at helping those who have or are affected by cancer.

"It's really unbelievable, the support from the community and everyone involved in the amount of work that goes into this thing," said UWSP head coach Luke Venne. "We were in about three or four different elementary schools this week, reading to kids. We have a couple of other events that we do. Our guys really have a lot of passion."

The game raises money a number of ways including t-shirt sales and raffles. The players in the game get in on the festivities as well. UWSP players can sport the name of someone they love on the back of their jerseys that's been affected by cancer. UWSP running back Brycen Cashin is very familiar with the event. A Pacelli grad, Cashin's jersey significance goes back to his days as a Cardinal.

"On the back of my jersey, I always do FAMILY something I bring over from Pacelli," said Cashin. "It's, 'Forget about me. I love you.' That's what it stands for. I love representing Pacelli and just my family.

Since 2010, the Pink Game has raised over $578,000. As the Pointers take the field on Saturday, they're excited to do so knowing all of their fans have something extra to cheer for.

"It's a great thing we got going with the Pink Game, a lot of traditions with the game," said Venne. "I'm just excited to get back home to Goerke. We get that opportunity to play in front of the home crowd. We want to play well."

The game kicks off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Goerke Park.
