What is the mysterious balloon floating over Utah?

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) -- On Wednesday, several people were wondering about a mysterious, unidentified balloon floating over parts of Utah.

Was it a spy balloon? A UFO? Something else entirely?

According to the Springville Police Department, the real answer wasn't quite as juicy -- although the officer who made a lighthearted social media post to quell citizens' concerns had some fun with the situation.

"Actually, reports are that there is a naughty pair of children here in town (we won't name names) who scared off their third nanny, and a new one blew in to teach them through music theory," the post reads, accompanied by a digitally edited image with the fictional nanny Mary Poppins hanging from a balloon.

So, what was the mysterious balloon really doing?

Springville PD said the balloon was identified -- by

"just a cop with a high school diploma" -- as a stratospheric exploration balloon being used to measure solar radiation.

According to NASA, scientific balloons can "provide observations of detailed processes on much finer spatial and temporal scales than satellites."

While ABC4.com has not yet confirmed the origin of the balloon, the balloon's course can be tracked on the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which tracks real-time and historical data of various types of aircraft.

Based on the information about the balloon on ADS-B, the balloon has been at a barometric altitude of about 64,400 feet. ABC4.com will be working to learn more about where the balloon was launched from.
