National Hurricane Center still watching area off North Carolina coast for tropical development

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- An area of low pressure that has now formed off the NC coast, is being watched by the National Hurricane Center for possible tropical (or subtropical) development over the next day or so.

As of Sunday morning, odds for development are up to 50% within the next 48 hours, and 50% overall. The low is non-tropical right now, but as it moves over the warm water of the Gulf Stream, it could gain tropical characteristics.

Even if the system does not become a full-fledged tropical system, it does mean that central North Carolina will likely experience heavy rain and gusty winds Monday into Tuesday.

There is still considerable uncertainty as to when and where the system will make "landfall". The computer model consensus is for the low to move ashore near Wilmington sometime during the latter part of the day on Monday.

The system will likely start causing impacts across Central NC Monday afternoon, with heavy rain and gusty winds picking up by Monday evening and Monday night.

Where the low ends up coming onshore will make a difference with how much rain & wind we could see and where the tornado threat would be maximized. The general consensus for rainfall from the models is that most of our region has the possibility to pick up 2 to 4 inches of rain over the next week.

Remember to stay up to date with how this system develops and impacts our weather through the weekend on CBS 17.
