ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fl. (WALA) - State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden announced that Elijah Simmons was sentenced to eight years followed by 20 years of probation with $124,833.43 in restitution for several charges including racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering.
The state attorney's office said Simmons, along with co-defendants Antonio Jr., Ramon Borner, David Cattell, Michael Hunter, and Tariji Barnes, deposited fraudulently produced checks and withdrew cash.
The defendants would recruit other conspirators to provide their bank information to use for depositing and withdrawing money in an attempt to disguise the source of the checks, according to officials.
The investigation resulted in charges for 64 fraudulent checks and 40 victims with a total loss of $251,643.9, according to the state attorney's office.
Simmons other charges were trafficking in debit cards, unlawful possessions of personal ID, carrying a concealed firearm and possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana.
Simmons codefendants received the following sentences:
Antonio Slocum Jr. received 13 years prison from all cases.
Michael Hunter received 40 months prison and 10 years probation.
Tajiri Barnes received 23 months prison and 10 years probation.
