Former longtime Farmington legislator Jerry Sandel dies

Nov. 4 -- Former state Rep. Jerry Wayne Sandel, a Farmington Democrat who served in the New Mexico House of Representatives nearly three decades, died Oct. 25.

Sandel, 82, died after a longtime bout with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to his obituary.

"Rep. Sandel leaves a lasting legacy as a longtime public servant, beloved community leader, and a respected business owner," leaders in the House Democratic caucus said in a joint statement. "Our hearts go out to his beloved wife Clair, his children, his entire family, and all who knew and loved him."

During his tenure in the Legislature, from 1971 until 2000, Sandel served as chair of the House Taxation and Revenue Committee and the Legislative Finance Committee.

"In these roles, Rep. Sandel was known for his steady demeanor and effective leadership," caucus leaders said.

His obituary described Sandel as a "mainstay in San Juan County" who "quickly became known as the conservative voice representing the community in Santa Fe."
