King Kullen recalls beef sold at Island Park store over possible contamination by glass or plastic

King Kullen has voluntarily recalled 18 packages of ground beef sold at its Island Park supermarket Monday because they may contain glass or plastic particles, the grocery chain said.

The meat was King Kullen's own brand of 80% lean ground beef that was ground in the store, located at 4601 Austin Blvd., and sold between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, according to King Kullen Grocery Co.

"The remaining packages were immediately removed from the shelves as soon as we became aware of the situation," the Hauppauge-based company said in a statement.

No other meat was affected, King Kullen said.

Anyone who purchased the ground beef at the Island Park supermarket during the specified times should return it to the store for a full refund, King Kullen said.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets licenses and inspects grocery stores in the state.

King Kullen said it notified the department of the possible meat contamination.

The department did not immediately respond to Newsday's request for comment Monday evening.
