New warming center opening on Norwich

NORWICH, Conn. (WFSB) - A new warming center will be opening in Norwich.

At the Buckingham Memorial Building on Main Street, an overnight shelter will open soon.

The goal is to have all the construction done by Christmas.

The plan is to open it only on the days when the governor enacts the severe cold weather protocol.

That means it won't be open everyday.

TVCCA will manage it and will be able to accommodate about 25 people.

Norwich has not had an overnight shelter in years.

"Just because it's cold doesn't mean they need it more. Some people need it in the summer too. All year long, it should be here," said Juliza Lopez, Norwich.

"In the future, we will look for larger space, more reliable space," said Josh Kelly, TVCCA Executive Director.

Public works crews from the city are spending the next few weeks doing construction to get this space ready before it opens.
