If anyone thought the Liberty girls soccer seniors were going to take their state championship and ride off into the sunset, they'd be severely mistaken. There are more seasons to come, more sports to play -- and perhaps more championships to win.
Roughly 12 hours after helping the Lions win a Class 1A state championship last Saturday, Kourtney Goff was in the gym getting ready for the basketball season.
"Sunday I went to shootaround to warm up, so no real time off," Goff said. "We won states on Saturday, then [basketball practice] was on Monday."
Technically the first basketball practice was the Friday before the state championship game, but Goff said coach Barry Green was accommodating to her, Paige McKnight and Alyssa Golombeck, the other members of the state championship soccer team who are gearing up for a new season.
"He was actually there Saturday supporting to us," Goff said.
Depending how deep the Liberty basketball team plays, it could be another quick turnaround for Goff as the senior three-sport athlete also plays lacrosse. The transitions between seasons, though, aren't as challenging as the summer or whenever training and work outside of school overlaps.
It's hectic, it's chaotic, but Goff wouldn't want it any other way.
"It's definitely a lot. We have a week, maybe five days my family can squeeze in some beach time, but I have club soccer, AAU basketball and club lacrosse, then open gyms for basketball. Soccer 7v7 was in the summer at the same time," she said. "And it's the same in the winter, right now I have basketball going on with indoor lacrosse. It's a lot of multiple things at once, but I'd rather stay busy throughout the summer doing sports than anything else."
She's not alone, however. A good portion of the soccer team was made up of athletes who play at least one other sport at Liberty.
Hannah DeVincent and Erin Martin, two of the key pieces of the state championship run, are All-County softball players.
"When you look at our team, you see softball players, you see track athletes, you see lacrosse players and I think all those sports involve teamwork and I think a lot of us playing together really shows on the field," DeVincent said after the state championship win. "I think playing those other sports really helps us having that connection on the field."
For Martin, it's evidence of how good each individual player is that they can excel season after season whether it's hitting a home run or scoring a goal.
"Everybody on the team is so athletic. They just excel at everything they do," she said.
While each sport might look different, an athlete can carry over a lot of the skills from one sport into another.
"Multi-sport athletes in general I think have definite advantages," Goff said. "Each sport can help your other sports in various ways. I think basketball helps soccer and lacrosse the most for me, because it's a lot of agility, a lot of short sprints and football. That can help out your defensive stance for lacrosse and a lot of things can contribute into your other sports."
Goff is now a state champion in two of her three sports, as her soccer gold medal joins the lacrosse titles she earned in 2022 and 2023. As she enters her third sport, there's more than just on-the-field skills she looks to bring with her.
"I think soccer teaches me a lot," she said. "It's a bigger team and a lot to take it. Basketball is smaller so there's not as many people to connect with, but basketball is such a different sport. I'm taking the mentality of a leadership role from soccer into basketball and making sure that positive mindset is key in basketball.
