The wildly popular series takes place in Montana, where the Dutton family controls the largest contiguous ranch in the country. Through the first half of season five, the show starred Kevin Costner as the family patriarch John Dutton.
The Dutton family is powerful, but complicated. They operate in a corrupt world where politicians are compromised by influential oil and lumber corporations who want to make billion-dollar land grabs. Since 2018, the storyline has seen its share of shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hard-earned respect. In that time, the Dutton property has been in constant conflict with the expanding town, Native American reservation and America's first national park that all share its borders.
We meet John Dutton, the seventh generation owner of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch - the largest contiguous ranch in the United States - and a Montana Livestock Commissioner. Although the family business is still growing, his land is under constant surveillance and threat from a developer, Dan Jenkins, who hopes to build on the property. A Native American casino owner, Chief Thomas Rainwater, also thinks the Dutton land was stolen from his people.
John's son Lee is next in line to run the ranch, but he is killed when retrieving stolen cattle from the Broken Rock Reservation. John's daughter Beth runs one of the country's largest bank firms. His son Jamie is in politics, running to be Montana's Attorney General. Lastly, John's youngest son, Kayce, lives on Broken Rock Reservation with his wife Monica and son Tate. Due to his Native American ties and the sometimes shady business on the ranch, he has no intentions of supporting the family businesses. However, he did kill Robert Long, who shot Lee.
John is desperate to bring the family together after Lee's death because he is also dying.
With the family back together in the ranching business, things could be working out for an eighth generation. Kayce is back on the ranch, Beth is expanding the Dutton land and Jamie even left his political career to return and help. But there are new problems on the horizon. The Beck brothers, who have proven themselves difficult for John Dutton, Thomas Rainwater and Dan Jenkins, become allies with John's enemies. With their political connections and access to militia groups, they become a great threat.
After surviving the Beck brothers, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch faces a new battle. The Fortune 500 company Market Equities wants control of the property at whatever cost. With its political ties, they will take whatever means necessary. One of John's rival ranchers also holds an old grudge and he's back to get even. With these looming threats, John wonders if he will be the last Dutton in the family line of ranch owners.
John is wounded and comatose from an attack on the Dutton Ranch, and it's not just him who is being targeted. Beth survives a bombing with scars of her own, and Kayce finds himself in a shootout at the Montana Livestock Association in Livingston. Those left on the ranch face off against a group of mercenaries attacking the property. Although Jamie originally returned to the family business, leaving politics behind, he now has left the ranch again to start his own legacy. While everyone finishes the season alive, they don't know who planned these attacks.
After surviving a months-long coma, John Dutton is elected as Montana's governor, and he can finally protect the family ranch. But Market Equities returns with one final plan to end the family's legacy.
Season five, part one left off with a civil war between Jamie and Beth Dutton. John Dutton was at risk of being impeached, and an illness was spreading through local wildlife, putting the family's cattle in danger.
Previously, the show starred Kevin Costner as John Dutton, a sixth-generation homesteader and devoted father. Costner made headlines earlier this year when he announced he would not return in his role in season 5 part 2. It is uncertain how his absence will be explained in the new episodes.
"Yellowstone" Season 5 part 2 airs Sundays from Nov. 10 to Dec. 15 at 10 p.m. ET on Paramount Network. The new episodes start at season 5 episode 9.
