Santa Maria Westside moves into Section 1 9-11's title game

At press time Monday, the Santa Maria Westside Little League 9-11 All-Star team had advanced to the championship game of the Section 1 Tournament.

Westside was scheduled to play Goleta Valley South Monday for the tournament championship. At press time, the tournament was taking place at the Montalvo Little League site in Ventura.

Westside had a chance Sunday to wrap up the tournament title, but Goleta Valley South, which came through the elimination bracket to reach the championship round, beat Westside 8-0 to force the Monday game to determine the tournament champion. Westside had just one hit.

The Santa Maria squad advanced to the championship round with wins in its first two tournament games. Westside defeated Conejo Valley 15-1 in a game that was called after four innings in Westside's tournament opener then edged Goleta Valley South 3-2 on an Ava Lopez walk-off solo home run to center field.

Lopez pitched a four-hit complete game and struck out 10. Luis Figueroa went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Westside. Luis Ornelas doubled for the Santa Maria squad.

Figueroa went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs against Conejo Valley. Adrian Lopez went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Ava Lopez went 2-for-2 with a double.

Westside starter Adrian Lopez and reliever John Ramirez combined on a four-hitter. Ramirez pitched 2 1/3 innings, and Ramirez worked 1 1/3 innings.

Westside reached the Section 1 Tournament by winning the District 65 tourney championship.
