Detroit Lions survive overtime, beat L.A. Rams 26-20 in season opener

Montgomery punished the Rams in overtime and finished the game with 17 carries, 91 yards and a touchdown.

Jared Goff, in his first game off a four-year, $212 million contract extension signed in May, didn't play his best but came up clutch down the stretch and conducted the game-tying drive in the fourth quarter. Goff never really got in a rhythm and finished 18-for-28 with 217 yards passing and one touchdown.

Matthew Stafford, who went to Lions ownership and requested to be traded in January 2021, fought through constant pressure from Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions front-seven as his depleted offensive line did just enough to help him stay clean. Stafford made some unbelievable throws, but couldn't finish off the Lions by picking up a first down late in the fourth quarter.

For the second time in as many meetings, the Lions and Goff got the last laugh, finishing off the Rams after beating them in last year's NFC playoffs.
