GCU students depart to cheer on men's basketball team in NCAA Tournament

PHOENIX (AZFamily) -- Grand Canyon University students are showing off their school spirit by hitting the road to cheer on their beloved basketball teams.

Early Friday, the last group of Havocs departed to Seattle to cheer on the men's basketball team in the first round of the March Madness tournament. Students woke up extra early to load the bus and leave for Sky Harbor Airport.

Fans were decked out in purple gear and giant hats, showing support for the Lopes.

The Lopes men's basketball team will be facing off against Maryland on Friday at 1:35 p.m. The Lopes, ranked 13, are going in as underdogs and looking to upset the No. 4 Terrapins.

But they're not the only ones going dancing! GCU's women's basketball team will be looking to continue their win streak into the tournament. The Lopes have won a staggering 30 games in a row and hold a perfect 16-0 conference record.

This will be the first big dance for the GCU women's team. They will take the court against the No. 4 Baylor Lady Bears on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Waco, Texas.

If you can't make it to Seattle or Waco on short notice, no problem. You can cheer on the Lopes at GCU's watch party on the arena lawn.

The party starts at noon ahead of both games. GCU's own Havoc House will feature a full menu and half-priced appetizers with both games showing on restaurant televisions.
