The very top priority for the New York Yankees this winter is re-signing Juan Soto. If they can only make that move, I'm sure that Yankees fans would be perfectly fine with that offseason because that means Soto would play in the Bronx for the next decade.
But what happens if the Yankees can't bring Soto back? What happens if Steve Cohen and the New York Mets outbid the Yankees and Soto remains in the Big Apple with their Subway Series rival?
The Yankees better have a very good backup plan on the chance that they do miss on Soto. If they do, and their backup plan flops, the fan base may just burn Yankee Stadium to the ground.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi recently touched on a potential backup plan if the Yankees miss on Soto. And honestly, it doesn't sound half bad.
"If you imagine the Yankees NOT signing Juan Soto. Then perhaps, they pivot to a combination of (Anthony) Santander, Christian Walker, maybe... Willy Adames," Morosi said on MLB Network.
Santander, Walker and Adames combined to post an 11.1 WAR last season. That's good for 3.7 WAR per player. Soto posted an 8.1 WAR by himself, good for twice the average of the other three. Just something to keep in mind.
If you throw in a starting pitcher, say, Corbin Burnes or Max Fried, this combination of players should really excite Yankees fans.
At the end of the day, everybody wants Soto. That's priority number one, two, three, and four. But having a solid backup plan that includes bringing in multiple All-Stars doesn't sound like a nightmare situation for the Bronx Bombers.
