Topsfield teen burned after cell phone charger explodes

A Topsfield girl was burned after her cell phone charger exploded at her friend's home over the weekend, causing a fire that left thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Audra Cataldo, 16, was watching a movie with her friend on a mattress before her phone, which was attached to a portable charger, caught on fire, according to WCVB.

Cataldo got a minor burn on her arm but refused to be taken to the hospital, according to the Topsfield Fire Department.

After the North Shore Regional 911 Center got a call about the fire on Sept. 14, the residents were asked to leave the home and first responders came, the Topsfield Fire Department said.

The Topsfield Fire Department removed the burning bedding from the home, checked if the fire spread and ventilated the house, the department said.

The flames were cleared within 45 minutes and left $5,000 worth of property damage, authorities said.

The department said the fire is under investigation by the Topsfield Fire Department with the help of the State Fire Marshal's Office.
