Jackson YMCA opens new wellness center, lobby with more to come in 2025

Since breaking ground in January 2024, construction at the new Jackson YMCA has been making good progress.

The Y at 127 W. Wesley St. has been working on a $25 million capital campaign since 2017 to create a reimagined facility.

Phase one of the project completed near the end of 2024, and phase two is underway. So far, members have enjoyed the new, completed amenities, CEO Shawna Tello said.

Man dies crashing into jackknifed semitrailer on I-94 east of Jackson

A Taylor man died early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a semitrailer that jackknifed on I-94 during a snowstorm.

James Bevins, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday, Jan. 11, after the crash on westbound I-94 near Mount Hope Road in Grass Lake Township, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Police and rescue crews were called at 4:45 a.m. to the area for a report of a semitrailer that had jackknifed on the freeway due to the snow and icy conditions, police said.

Long-stalled solar farm development could be returning to Grass Lake

A project to bring a large-scale solar farm to rural Jackson County is moving forward after it stalled for several months.

Grass Lake Township trustees have been meeting with representatives of Grass Lake Solar since November in an effort to develop a "workable" local solar ordinance. The township hopes to amend the ordinance in ways that would benefit the community more than the state's standard site requirements, Township Supervisor John Lesinski said.

Jackson County to save thousands through $1 landfill purchase

A single $1 purchase could help Jackson County save tens of thousands each year.

A proposal to seize full control of a landfill site currently co-owned by Jackson County and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources received unanimous support during a Monday study session of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

The purchase of the property will be up for full approval at the board's next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

New cameras in Jackson County park to discourage vandalism, dumping trash

A Blackman Township park has received some extra surveillance to create a safer space.

Blackman Township recently installed new cameras at Rod Mills Park, 3300 W. Parnall Road. The $36,650 project will make it easier for the township to turn away vandals, while providing a safer park experience for guests, Blackman Township Supervisor Pete Jancek said.

"There's vandalism that goes on down there, and plus it just makes people that use the park feel safer knowing that there are cameras because it's quite a way back off of the road," Jancek said.

Jackson reallocating money for $7.5M water main project after special assessments rejected

Funding a new water main in Jackson might come at the cost of some future construction, city officials said.

The Jackson City Council voted down a pair of special assessments, periodical charges to homeowners in the area, during a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The assessments were proposed to fund construction efforts on two downtown Jackson streets - East Pearl Street from Cooper Street to Waterloo Avenue, and East Avenue from Michigan Avenue to Plymouth Street - to install a replacement water main.

Toddler critically injured in I-94 crash now in stable condition

A 3-year-old girl critically injured in a crash on I-94 Tuesday morning is now in stable condition and recovering.

After receiving emergency medical treatment at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital for injuries suffered in the crash, Jan. 14, the girl was transferred to the ICU at C.S. Mott Children's in Ann Arbor where she has been listed in stable condition, Michigan State Police First Lt. Rene Gonzales said.
