The Philadelphia Eagles currently boast one of the best if not the best defenses in the NFL. But the depth of that defense is about to be tested as one of their starters is slated to undergo surgery.
According to Zach Berman of PHLY, Eagles defensive lineman Bryce Huff is set to undergo a procedure on his wrist on Thursday. The decision comes after Huff played the past few weeks with a hard cast on his arm. Per the report, he is expected to continue playing at some point this season.
"Bryce Huff will undergo a procedure on his wrist Thursday, per league source. He's played with a hard cast the past two weeks, but the hope is this procedure will help him later in the season," Berman wrote.
Speaking to the media, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said that the cast has left his thumb and palm immobilized, making him less than 100-percent effective.
"He's got a big cast on his hand, leaves his thumb totally immobilized. And really, his palm is immobilized. So he's just got four fingers dangling there with no thumb or palm to help him. On the less obvious downs, it just makes sense to put a guy in there that's 100 percent," Fangio said.
Huff joined the Eagles on a three-year contract in the offseason after a stellar 2023 season with the New York Jets. But after recording 10.0 sacks and 21 QB hits in 2023, his production hasn't really carried over to Philly.
Through 10 games he has 2.5 sacks, four QB hits, three tackles for loss and only a handful of open field tackles.
But while Huff may be ineffective now, he could be a difference-maker late in the season when the team needs a change of pace.
