Dishwashers are nearly essential for many households: 64 per cent of UK families with two children have one, according to Statista. Options include freestanding, slimline, tabletop, semi-integrated, and fully integrated models. The best integrated dishwashers give your kitchen a clean, streamlined look because a panel matching your cabinetry can be added to the front door, blending in seamlessly.
"I prefer a fully integrated dishwasher, since the aesthetics of the kitchen are more important to me than load capacity," says Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance repair expert at Domestic & General. "However, they are typically more expensive than free-standing dishwashers. And you can't easily take one with you if you move home."
An integrated dishwasher, with enough space for all your kitchen utensils, including frying pans and chef's knives, adds value to your kitchen, but there are dozens on the market, from manufacturers such as Miele, SMEG, Bosch and AEG. To understand their pros and cons, I asked experts from Appliances Direct and AO as well as D&G's Palmer-Smith. You can read their recommendations below, followed by their answers to some frequently asked questions. But if you're in a hurry, here's a quick look at their top five:
Which are the best integrated dishwashers in 2024? At a glance
What should you look for in an integrated dishwasher?
For those aiming to lower bills, like with the best washer-dryers, energy efficiency is crucial. Running a fully-loaded dishwasher can be four times more energy-efficient than hand washing with hot water. Energy ratings go from A to E, with A being the best. Many models now come with eco settings and air-dry options, helping to further reduce energy and water consumption.
The installation process should be your second consideration. Do you have space? Gwilym Snook, heated laundry and dishwasher expert at AO, explains: "Integrated dishwashers typically need a 596mm cabinet door to be fitted to the front panel."
Another advantage of integrated dishwashers is that the cabinet helps to muffle noise. Most run at about 40 to 45dB, which is considered roughly equal to a library, or the ambient sound of a suburban neighbourhood.
Many integrated models feature advanced technology, including smart connectivity to an app on your phone. While they may initially be more expensive than freestanding options, the aesthetic appeal and space-saving design often justify the investment.

How we chose the best integrated dishwashers
To help you decide which integrated dishwasher to invest in, I asked the advice of experienced dishwasher specialists, including Nathan Paul, product expert and e-commerce director at Appliances Direct, Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic & General, plus Gwilym Snook, dishwasher expert at AO.
I also surveyed a large number of dishwasher using adults who I know have used these particular integrated dishwashers. All of the above advised me based on factors such as size, capacity, noise level, and safety features for families with children.
We like: the easy-to-use controls and how quiet it is, plus its energy efficiency
Our experts agreed that this is a standout choice if you're after a blend of performance, efficiency, and modern technology. With an energy efficiency rating of A, this model is particularly noted for its innovative "AutoDos" feature, which automatically dispenses the precise amount of detergent needed for each load. According to dishwasher expert Snook, the Miele is, "a great product which is very energy efficient."
The Miele features an array of specialised wash programmes, including one for pasta and paella dishes. Users have also praised its quiet operation. Mum-of-three, Lisa tells us: "When we bought our new house it had a kitchen diner, we had to replace our old loud, clunky freestanding dishwasher. Out of all the research we did - which was a lot - this always came out top. And we were not disappointed. It's a dream, so quiet like a whisper."
The Miele also features a flexible interior design, allowing for adjustable racks and a variety of loading options, meaning you can mix delicate glassware with heavy pots and pans. "Although it comes at a higher price point," expert Nathan Paul says, it stands out as a top-performing integrated dishwasher due to its capacity, low noise levels, effective programmes and reliability."
The Hisense offers impressive value, especially for families. It's able to accommodate 16 place settings compared to the usual 14. As appliance expert Gwilym Snook highlights, its C efficiency rating is not stellar, but beats most others at this price point. It also has a quicker wash cycle than the Beko, below.
Ian, a father of three, raves about how the Hisense has transformed his kitchen routine: "With three kids, I'm constantly washing dishes. The quick wash is a lifesaver when unexpected guests arrive" . The Wi-Fi connectivity allows him to monitor the dishwasher remotely, ensuring that he can fit its operation seamlessly into his schedule, although it initially took him a while to set this up. The experts agree that this dishwasher exceeds expectations in terms of performance.
The SMEG strikes an impressive balance between value and performance. With an A-rating for energy efficiency, it promises low running costs without compromising on power. Snook praises it as "A-rated and great value for money," underscoring its affordability in the competitive dishwasher market.
For mum-of-twins Jen, this dishwasher has been a game-changer: "With two toddlers, I often feel like I'm in a constant cycle of washing dishes. This SMEG handles everything I throw at it; pasta sauce, caked-on cereal bowls, you name it". Its capacity for 13 place settings makes it ideal for large families, allowing Jen to load it up after mealtimes.
It is not the quietest in our list, but operates at around 46 dB which is generally considered 'light background noise', nothing to disturb young children napping nearby.
The second SMEG dishwasher on our list is a delightful fusion of retro design and modern functionality. With its stylish 50s aesthetic, it has quickly gained attention for being "probably the most stylish" option on the market, according to appliance expert Snook.
This built-in dishwasher not only enhances the kitchen's visual appeal but also offers excellent value for its price. Liam, a design enthusiast and father of two, recently installed this dishwasher and couldn't be happier. "It's like having a piece of art in my kitchen that cleans dishes," he says.
Measuring 60cm, it fits snugly into standard cabinetry while providing enough space for 12 place settings. Expert Paul adds: "This version combines retro charm with solid performance, offering both reliable cleaning and B-rated energy efficiency. It's a winning choice for a kitchen that prioritises style."
If you're looking for a compact yet efficient dishwasher, this slimline dishwasher from Beko could be a great choice. With a width of just 45cm, it fits into smaller spaces, making it ideal for flats. Despite this, it accommodates up to 10 place settings, ensuring plenty of room for dishes after family meals. Appliance expert Snook praises it, highlighting the 'extra quick wash cycles'.
Grandparents Rose and David recently downsized. Rose tells us: "We couldn't believe how quickly this dishwasher gets everything clean. It's a lifesaver for our little kitchen." David adds: "Having this machine means we can spend more time enjoying our grandchildren and less time washing up."
The Bosch dishwasher features intelligent programming. Snook explains: "You can control it from your smartphone. After each cycle, it asks what you did and didn't like. If dishes aren't dry enough, it will pump more hot air in the next cycle - which is very clever."
At 60cm, it can prove tricky for installation, but it's ideal for larger households. For students Ella and Louis, it's a lifesaver: "No more arguments over who's left dishes piling up, we just set it up on our phone and let it do the rest," Ella tells us. The students say that the smart controls and adjustable settings mean they have consistent clean results.
Priced at the higher end, its intelligent design, connectivity, and user-adaptive technology offer solid value. It may even save a relationship or two.
We like: its hygiene-specific programmes, flexible layout and energy efficiency
We don't like: higher price point, tricky installation and a learning curve for smart features
The Hisense has an impressive capacity of 16 place settings, enough for large families, and its fully flexible baskets make loading various dish types, from pans to delicate glasses, a breeze. For mum-of-three Lucy, this has proven a game-changer.
"We invested in this and never looked back," she says, praising how easy it is to accommodate odd-shaped items thanks to the adjustable racks. This flexibility allows for more efficient cycles without needing to run multiple loads.
The Hisense also features a hygiene-focused cycle that runs at a higher temperature. It's also remarkably quiet, running at a barely detectable 39 dB. Though slightly pricier than basic models, the reasonable energy efficiency and thoughtful programs add value in the long run.
This is a great no-fuss option perfect for smaller households. It offers a 10-place setting capacity, which is enough for a couple or small family, and keeps its design straightforward without sacrificing functionality. What truly sets it apart is the Push & Go feature, says Snook: "Load the dishwasher and press one button, and it will start the cycle." Adding that the simplicity makes it ideal for anyone looking for an easy, efficient machine without complicated settings.
Nan Elsie loves hers, saying it's 'not fancy' but instead gets the job done effectively without any hassle. At 46 dB, it operates at a moderate noise level. The adjustable top rack provides extra flexibility, allowing for taller items in the lower basket when needed.
Although the Indesit's basic design doesn't include advanced features like Wi-Fi connectivity or a third cutlery rack, for users prioritising convenience and straightforward functionality, it's a great value.
AEG's semi-integrated dishwasher (designed for the control panel to be visible) features SatelliteClean, which ensures that every inch of the cavity is thoroughly sprayed. Expert Paul says, "The technology means thorough cleaning results for heavily soiled dishes.
"It also has AirDry technology, where the door automatically opens at the end of the cycle to let air in and moisture out. While it's priced towards the top end of the semi-integrated category, its exceptional cleaning capabilities, flexibility and decent energy efficiency make it a top choice."
What are the key differences between an integrated and freestanding dishwasher?
Integrated dishwashers are nearly always a standard size: 82cm high, 60cm wide and 56cm deep. This is slightly smaller than the typical freestanding dishwasher. Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic & General, points out: "Freestanding dishwashers generally hold a larger load, since integrated appliances are restricted by available space."
Freestanding models are also simpler to install and move, making them ideal for renters or anyone who might relocate, and they are usually more affordable. However, integrated dishwashers offer a flush fit within cabinetry, ideal for modern or open-plan kitchens. Additionally, their cabinet door provides noise insulation, so they tend to operate more quietly.
What door panel should I use for an integrated Dishwasher?
For an integrated dishwasher, your door panel choice is crucial for a proper fit and seamless look. According to Ian Palmer-Smith, a standard integrated dishwasher typically requires a 596mm door, while slimline models need a 715mm x 446mm panel, and semi-integrated dishwashers (on which the control panel is visible at the top) require 570mm x 596mm doors.
Importantly, these door panels must be undrilled to allow for precise alignment with the dishwasher's fixing points. Many opt for a matching cabinet panel to maintain the kitchen's cohesive style. But ensure that the door's measurements align with your appliance type for a flush, integrated finish.
What are the disadvantages of an integrated dishwasher?
As Ian Palmer-Smith from Domestic & General notes, "The downside of integrated dishwashers is needing to remove and re-attach the cabinet door if you ever change or replace the appliance." This process can be time-consuming, especially for those who want a quick installation.
Integrated models are also generally more expensive than freestanding options, which may not suit every budget. Additionally, once fitted, they're not as easy to move - so if you're renting or planning a move, a freestanding dishwasher might be more practical.
What is the difference between a fully integrated and semi integrated dishwasher?
The primary difference between a fully integrated and a semi-integrated dishwasher lies in the visibility of the control panel. Ian Palmer-Smith from Domestic & General explains, "Fully integrated dishwashers will have controls on the top edge of the door, making them invisible when closed. Semi-integrated dishwashers will have the control panel exposed." This makes semi-integrated models slightly easier to access for settings and monitoring cycles, but doesn't deliver the same completely hidden look as fully integrated designs.
What you need to think about before buying an integrated dishwasher
"If you have an idea of where you'd like to fit your dishwasher, measure the height, width, and depth of the available space," says Matt Ayres, an appliances expert at RDO Kitchen and Appliances.
"If you are a single professional or couple, with a small to medium-sized kitchen, a 45cm wide dishwasher could hold enough capacity. Larger families or those with more space in their kitchen may choose a 60cm wide dishwasher.
"Account for any additional cables and pipes, as these may take up some extra room behind the machine. Also check the fitting of your kitchen cabinets' kickboards, as these typically sit further in than the rest of your kitchen unit. As your dishwasher will be placed behind this, you'll need to ensure that the bottom of your dishwasher fits in this space.
"Lastly, a sturdy and level floor is essential. Due to the doors of your cabinet and the dishwasher, if the floor is not level or tends to sink, the dishwasher may shift position after installation. This could cause the doors to catch, making loading and unloading difficult.
"Next, ensure there is a suitable power source available. Most dishwasher power cables are approximately 1-2 meters long. It's best practice and much safer to plug larger appliances directly into the electricity plug, instead of using extension leads.
"If the place you intend placing your dishwasher does not have a suitable power source, you may want to chose an alternative location. If your budget allows, and your chosen space is the only option, you can also get a new socket fitted by a professional for your integrated dishwasher.
"One key consideration when choosing the most suitable appliance is its energy efficiency. Look for machines with an A, B, or C energy rating for the most efficient energy consumption, such as the Siemens IQ 300 integrated dishwasher in the 45cm category or the Miele G500 dishwasher in the 60cm category.
"Looking for features such as Eco Power technology and half-load functions, which allow you to use your dishwasher in the most sustainable and energy-efficient way. Families with smaller children may want to invest in a dishwasher with a Child lock function, while busy professionals may want to opt for a dishwasher with Home Connect technology. This will allow you to control your appliance with your phone or tablet.
"Finally, once you have chosen your dishwasher, the installation process is also extremely important. It's always best to use an appliance company that offers installation services to ensure your appliance is fitted safely and seamlessly while ensuring required cabinetry modifications and plumbing are also taken care of."
