Harris shifts question about Secret Service confidence to Springfield controversy

PHILADELPHIA (TND) -- Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday pivoted an interview answer about her confidence in the Secret Service to security concerns in Springfield, Ohio.

A member of the National Association of Black Journalists asked Harris whether she has "full confidence" in the agency to protect her and her family. The question came just days after Secret Service agents at Trump International Golf Club in Florida fired shots at a suspected gunman.

I do, but, I mean, you can go back to Ohio," Harris answered. "Not everybody has Secret Service, and there are far too many people in our country right now who are not feeling safe."

Trump claimed during last week's debate between him and Harris that migrants were eating the pets of Springfield residents. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said that more than 30 bomb threats have since been directed toward Springfield even though the city manager asserted there have not been any credible reports of migrants eating pets.

Harris noted during Tuesday's interview that it is important to fight for everybody's safety.

"I have Secret Service protection, but that doesn't change my perspective on the importance of fighting for the safety of everybody in our country and doing everything we can to, again, lift people up and not beat people down so they feel alone and are made to feel small and made to feel like they're somehow not a part of it or us," she said.

The Secret Service fell under scrutiny after Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. Then-Director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down after acknowledging security lapses leading up to the shooting. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers had called for her to leave the position.

On Monday, President Joe Biden told reporters the agency needs help.

"There is one thing I wanna make clear: The service needs more help," he said. "And I think Congress should respond to their needs if they in fact need more services."
