'General Hospital' star Chad Duell leaving show after 14 years

Duell plays Michael Corinthos, adopted son of mob boss Sonny Corinthos.

Chad Duell has announced that he is leaving General Hospital after 14 years on the show. The actor first joined the iconic ABC soap in 2010 as Michael Corinthos, the son of A.J. Quartermaine and Carly Corinthos, and the adopted son of mob boss Sonny Corinthos.

Duell broke the news on social media, with series executive producer Frank Valenti confirming the star's exit.

"After many incredible years with General Hospital, I've decided to step away from the show," Duell wrote on Instagram. "This wasn't an easy decision for me, but it feels like the right time in my life. I'm beyond grateful to Frank Valentini, the cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who have been like family to me throughout this amazing journey."

He continued, "To all the fans: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your unwavering support and for letting Michael Corinthos be a part of your lives. Your love and encouragement has meant the world to me. This isn't a goodbye -- it's a 'see you later.' Much love."

Valenti addressed Duell's departure, writing on X, "I have loved working with Chad over the years and wish him nothing but the best. He is a terrific actor and will be missed by everyone at GH."

While he noted that the show has "no plans" to recast Duell's role, he added, "but you never know in daytime."

Dylan Cash originated the part of Michael Corinthos in 2002, playing the character until 2008, and he was replaced by Drew Garrett in 2009. Duell came onboard in 2010 and has portrayed Corinthos ever since, with Robert Adamson occasionally pinch-hitting for Duell when he was unavailable.

In 2015, Duell won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his performance on General Hospital. Though primarily known for GH, Duell has also appeared on shows like Arrow, The Suite Life on Deck, and Wizards of Waverly Place.

Duell's is only the latest exit to rock Port Charles this year, with Kelly Monaco, Michael Easton, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez among GH's high-profile departures. But as is the nature of soap operas, a number of stars have returned, including Steve Burton, Jonathan Jackson, Rick Hearst, Emma Samms, and Scott Reeves.

ABC did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
