Three women have been charged in connection with the neglect and death of a 79-year-old woman in Brockton, prosecutors announced Friday.
Eva Cardoso, 53, Kayla Cardoso, 31, and Lisa Hamilton, 64, were indicted and arraigned in Brockton Superior Court on charges including manslaughter, caretaker neglect of an elder, larceny, and Medicaid fraud, according to Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.
Prosecutors alleged that the women's failure to properly care for the elderly victim, Dinora Cardoso, ultimately led to her death.
According to the DA's office, Eva is Dinora's daughter and worked through a state program as Dinora's personal care attendant (PCA). Kayla, who is Eva's niece and Dinora's granddaughter, acted as the victim's health care proxy.
The women allegedly billed MassHealth for services that were not provided, including for services allegedly provided while Dinora was inpatient and after her death, according to officials.
On May 17, 2023, Eva called 911 to report that her mother needed an ambulance. First responders discovered the victim covered in cockroaches, bedbugs, and feces, according to officials. Dinora died two days later at the hospital from necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis due to infected ulcers, according to the DA's office.
Hamilton was a registered nurse who was responsible for visiting Dinora at least once weekly to check on her care, medical conditions, and medication intake, according to the DA's office. Investigators say that one week before Eva called 911, Hamilton allegedly visited Dinora and reported that she was clean, well cared for, alert, and that her diabetes was well-controlled.
"She made no mention of pressure ulcers, feces, bed bugs, or cockroaches," the DA's office said in a news release. "EMT and hospital records clearly showed that Dinora had completely uncontrolled diabetes. Additionally, an expert entomologist informed investigators that the level of insect infestation Dinora experienced would have taken at least several weeks to accumulate."
Bank records allegedly show that Eva provided a portion of her PCA check to Kayla on a regular basis, according to officials. MassHealth paid Eva over $140,000 for her care of Dinora, according to investigators.
The women are due to appear in Brockton Superior Court for a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 15.
