Get ready for regular three-point barrages from Illinois. Brad Underwood made shooting a priority when piecing together this roster, and these Illini certainly have the green light. They made enough of them Friday night -- 15 on 38 attempts -- to knock off SIU Edwardsville 90-58 and claim a second victory against an Ohio Valley Conference team in five days. Four different Illini made multiple three-pointers, with Ben Humrichous' five leading the way.
What it means
Friday night's win wasn't all smooth sailing even with Illinois shooting 39 percent from three-point range. Brad Underwood and the Illini coaching staff weren't thrilled with their team's rebounding effort -- both in not getting enough of their missed threes back and in how many second-chance points SIUE racked up. If Illinois is going to put up that many three-pointers on a regular basis, getting a higher percentage of its misses back has to be a priority.
What's next
Just a single game next week for Illinois (2-0) with Oakland coming back to State Farm Center. But it's not the same Golden Grizzlies (1-1) that mostly hung with the Illini last season and went on to basically end the John Calipari era at Kentucky by knocking off the Wildcats in the NCAA tournament. Mostly because three-point bomber Jack Gohlke is now playing in Montenegro and Trey Townsend used the offseason to transfer to Arizona.
What was said
"He's mature. He's smart. He plays to win. He doesn't play for a stat line. He just provides what the game gives him. I think he had a game back when he was with Lithuania this summer he was maybe 17 assists and then the next night he had 37 (points). It's just what the game needs. The beauty of what KJ does is he delivers at the right time where guys can really just catch it and shoot it." -- Brad Underwood on Kasparas Jakucionis' near triple-double
