Two weeks ago, the Nederland football team stunned fans statewide by defeating Port Neches-Groves in the annual Mid-County Madness rivalry game.
The win gave Nederland community bragging rights, but more importantly, put the Bulldogs in the driver's seat to the win the District 8-5A-II championship.

But two weeks can change everything in a high school football season. After last week's loss to Lake Creek, the Bulldogs needed a win on Friday night to secure their league title.
Instead, Nederland couldn't capitalize on its golden opportunity, and Port Neches-Groves is now celebrating another district championship.
Montgomery spoiled Nederland's party, shaking up the final standings with a 34-28 overtime win over the Bulldogs on Friday. In a back-and-forth, rain-filled night, Montgomery tied the game in the final seconds of regulation before winning in the extra period.
Meanwhile, Port Neches-Groves easily defeated Dayton, 30-3. Because of a lightning delay, Nederland's game lasted much longer into the night, meaning PN-G was left waiting to see if they would be celebrating a district championship.

The two outcomes created a complete shift in the 8-5A-II standings. Instead of capturing the league championship with a win, Nederland now drops into the No. 4 playoff seed.
Conversely, Port Neches-Groves shoots up to the No. 1 seed as the champion. The final district standings are listed below:
