'Grossly unfair:' Joe Buck delivers strong message to Tom Brady critics

Tom Brady began his career as FOX's lead analyst when he called the Dallas Cowboys-Cleveland Browns Week 1 game last weekend. It was met with mixed reviews across social media with some fans already throwing in the towel on Brady and others willing to let him work out the kinks.

Brady was a bit awkward at times throughout the broadcast, but there will likely be growing pains in Brady's freshman season in an entirely new role than what he was used throughout his 23-year NFL career.

For Joe Buck -- a longtime legendary broadcaster who's also heard his fair share of criticism over the years -- he didn't appreciate the hate Brady received after one game.

"This is a hard job, and we all do our piece of it. We all have to be able to settle in, know what you need to know," Buck said Monday on "The Michael Kay Show." "I talked to him on Friday, and I don't think anybody's put in more work into being prepared for his first broadcast than Tom did. And now, you have to go forward and settle in. It's grossly unfair that everybody wants to weigh in after five seconds. That's not the way it works."

Brady spent a year preparing before taking over as FOX's lead analyst alongside Kevin Burkhardt. He sought out advice from others in the business, and was ready to put in more work after he was in the booth over the summer during the UFL championship game. The 47-year-old also posted a photo on his Instagram story on Monday that he was preparing for Week 2 when the New Orleans Saints take on the Cowboys.

For as much criticism as Brady received, his former coach Bill Belichick thought he did a great job in the booth.

I think that he had a lot better day when Dallas went to Cleveland than I had in my first game in Cleveland when Dallas came in," Belichick said on the latest episode of the "Let's Go!" podcast. "... I thought Tom did great. I thought he brought up a lot of great points in the game. Certainly the number of times Cleveland went backwards he continued to highlight, and that's a problem. ... He made some good points about (Browns quarterback) Deshaun (Watson) hanging in there, even at the end of the game."

It's clear Brady wants to be the best version of a broadcaster he can be. It doesn't help that Greg Olsen was a fan-favorite when he was in Brady's position the last two seasons before the former quarterback took over this year. But Brady is someone who knows the game well, and put in a lot of work on and off the field in order to be the quest QB for his team. It wouldn't be a surprise to find out he's putting in the same amount of work after each game he calls.
