The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason needing to re-tool their bullpen for the 2025 season and beyond after an up-and-down 2024.
After signing veteran left-handed reliever Justin Wilson earlier in the offseason, the Red Sox have found their next target.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Boston and Chapman have agreed to a one-year, $10.75 million deal pending a physical.
Chapman, 36, originally signed a six-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010 after defecting from Cuba. He made his debut with the club later that year. He's also spent time with the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
In his career, he's earned seven All-Star nominations and won two World Series with the Cubs and Rangers. He also holds the MLB record for fastest pitch at 105.8 miles per hour.
He appeared in 68 games for the Pirates in 2024, posting a 3.79 ERA, 1.346 WHIP and 14.3 K/9. As a former shutdown closer, Boston may be looking to have him end games for them in 2025. He could compete for that role with Liam Hendriks and other options in their bullpen in Spring Training.
