DWR seeking information after cow moose illegally killed in Wasatch County

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) -- The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officers are seeking information after a cow moose was reportedly killed with archery equipment and left to waste earlier this month.

According to a press release, DWR biologists first learned about the dead moose after its GPS collar gave out a mortality signal, indicating it died and was no longer moving. Biologists responded to the scene, which was in Strawberry Valley, to learn more about the cause of death when they found the moose had been shot with "archery equipment."

Following an investigation, DWR conservation officers believe the incident happened on Sept. 2. DWR said no attempts had been made to salvage any of the meat, and the moose had been left to waste.

DWR said that there was a bull moose hunt taking place at the time of the incident, but the hunt for the cow moose, which are typically antlerless, doesn't begin until Sept. 21. DWR also noted the carcass was found in an area where it wouldn't be difficult to find and retrieve it.

DWR is asking that anyone with information regarding the illegal killing of this moose or any other wildlife report it in one of the following ways:

DWR said anyone with information can also call Officer Ethan Justinger at 385-450-0276, adding that a reward may be available for information that helps find those responsible.
