Whenever possible, I try to hit the self-checkout line at a store but that option could be ending soon.

Illinois And Wisconsin Stores Are Eliminating Self-Checkout Lines

We split up chores and household duties in my family. One of my jobs is going to the grocery store. It's not my favorite but I do my best to deal with it. I usually don't have a huge amount of items so I'll hit the self-checkout whenever possible. It seems to move faster than using a cashier.

In the beginning, there was a limit on the number of items you could bring through the self-checkout. It was really a thing. Then during Covid, those lines became a big deal. Stores added or expanded them. Most places had more self-check options than cashiers.

You could start going through the self-check with a cart full of groceries. I was doing that a lot because the cashier lines were so long. For most people, it just became a part of shopping. You could usually navigate it without many issues so everyone started doing it. Even my mom, who has absolutely no technical knowledge.

Once again, things will be changing on how we check out and pay at stores in Illinois. In fact, many places are removing the self-checkout lines. Hopefully, they're adding more cashiers. The remaining self-check lines have turned into express with 10 items or less.

I understand why businesses would want to make those changes. Stealing has increased drastically since shopping has become a self-checkout world. It's much easier to take items without paying when you're basically in control of what gets scanned.

Some of the stores in Illinois and Wisconsin have slowly jumped on the no self-check with many more following soon. So far, Target, Walmart, Hy-Vee, Pick 'n Save, and a few others. I'm guessing more will follow down the road.
