OKC Thunder jersey history No. 3 - Vernon Maxwell (1999-2000)

OKC Thunder jersey history No. 3 - Vernon Maxwell (1999-2000)

The Oklahoma City Thunder (and the Seattle Supersonics before them) have 51 jersey numbers worn by the players who have suited up for the franchise since its founding at the start of the 1967-68 season. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Thunder Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.

And while those Supersonics jerseys may not remain part of the franchise history should a new team be established in Seattle as was the case with the return of the Charlotte Hornets, they are part of the Thunder's history today. For this article, we continue with the fifth jersey number in the series, jersey No. 3, with 20 players in total having donned the jersey in the history of the franchise.

The fourth of those 20 players to wear No. 3 did so in the Supersonics era, Seattle combo guard Vernon Maxwell. An alum of his hometown University of Florida, Maxwell was picked up from that school with the 47th overall pick of the 1988 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets, but was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs for draft assets.

The Gainesville, Florida native would play for that ball club, the Houston Rockets, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Spurs again, the Orlando Magic, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Sacramento Kings before he would leave the latter team in free agency to join the SuperSonics.

Maxwell played a mere 47 games for Seattle before he would be traded with Lazaro Borrell, Vladimir Stepania, and draft assets in a huge, four-team deal sending him to the New York Knicks. During his time with the Sonics, he put up 10.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, all wearing the No. 3 jersey.
