Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was among the crowd on the flagship day of the St Leger Festival in Doncaster.

The racecourse said 23,339 people attended, an 11% increase on 2023, including the PM and his family.

Jan Brueghel, ridden by jockey Sean Levey and trained by Aidan O'Brien, won the St Leger, the final classic of the British flat racing season.

Sir Keir said: "There aren't many better days out than the races in the sunshine."

Dubbed the "world's oldest classic", the St Leger first ran in Doncaster in 1776.

Doncaster Racecourse executive director Rachel Harwood said the day had been a "great success", adding it was "fantastic" to see the event draw a bigger crowd than last year.

She said it showed racegoers "still want to be part of those special moments in history".

Sir Keir said: "It's a pleasure to be back in Doncaster for the historic St Leger this year.

"My wife has a close connection with the racecourse so the thrill of the St Leger is no stranger to us."
