Mario Lopez criticized for image touting 'less intelligent' star-obsessed fans

Entertainment Weekly's Oscars expert, 'RuPaul's Drag Race' beat reporter, host of 'Quick Drag' Twitter Spaces, and cohost of 'EW's BINGE' podcast. Almost all of the drag content on this site is my fault (you're welcome).

Mario Lopez, general celebrity and host of the celebrity news program Access Hollywood, has courted criticism after posting an image of another social media post touting a reported psychological study observing "less intelligent" people who are "obsessed with celebrities."

The 50-year-old shared on Thursday a photo of the text -- taken from aggregation site Intels -- to both his X feed and Instagram Story, without accompanying text (or any indication that he agreed with the headline) alongside either post.

Still, the Saved by the Bell actor's replies were soon filled with pushback, with one X user responding by quipping, "What about people who host shows about celebrities" and a sweat-drop emoji.

Other replies echoed the sentiment, with one writing, "Says the person who hosts a show for people obsessed with celebrities," though that specific comment pointed out, "He's PROFITING off the fools. Use your brain!!!"

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Lopez for comment.

While Lopez nor many of the comments referenced it, the image that accompanied the article headline Lopez shared included a shot of Taylor Swift posing with a fan. Swift made headlines on Tuesday night after she publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president following Harris' performance against Donald Trump during the second presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle.

Following Swift's endorsement, many conservatives -- including Trump's running mate, Hillbilly Elegy subject J.D. Vance -- speculated that the pop superstar's life isn't relatable to the overwhelming majority of American voters. Vance recently said that he thinks citizens won't be "influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans," particularly citing inflation costs that he speculated wouldn't impact Swift as much as they'll take a toll on the middle class.

Trump himself also directly responded to Swift's endorsement, as the singer-songwriter's statement also referenced the fact that Trump previously shared AI-generated images of her and her fanbase supporting him.

"I actually like Mrs. [Brittany] Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth. She's a big Trump fan," Trump said when asked about Swift on Fox News, naming the wife of NFL star (and teammate of Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce) Patrick Mahomes, who recently "liked" one of Trump's social media posts -- a move that led to controversy for Swift after the "Bad Blood" performer embraced Brittany at the U.S. Open. tennis tournament.
