Tom Brady Blames Early Broadcast Struggles on Need to Dumb Down Game for Fans

Tom Brady is a football expert and he has the career longevity and Super Bowl hardware to prove that.

But with his playing days ostensibly now behind him for good, Brady is learning a new craft -- the art of explaining the game in an interesting fashion to football plebeians.

Brady caught considerable heat after his first-ever NFL broadcast on Fox in a Week 1 matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns. Calling the game seemed to slow down for Brady in Week 2, as he was more collected and provided more concise analysis at a reasonable pace.

On Monday the five-time MVP joined his former podcast, "Let's Go," which is now hosted by Jim Gray and Bill Belichick, the latter of whom was Brady's long-time coach with the New England Patriots.

During his time on the program, Brady talked about the difficulty of dumbing the game down for casual fans and why that is one of the hardest parts of his new $375 million job.

I think when I'm sitting up there, so much of my commentary as I go on is going to be based on trying to make the game simple for the viewer to understand when we know it's not simple. Anybody can get on there and talk about, "In Cover 2, this is what you gotta do. You gotta read the high-low."

Yeah, that's fun and that's technical, but people won't understand s*** if we do that. So we gotta find simple ways, and I've gotta continue to find simple ways to describe that to people who are just tuning in for three hours every week.

It's a challenge for sure. I definitely feel like a rookie out there. S*** is moving fast when I'm up in the booth.

Brady will next grab the mic for the Week 3 showdown between the Cowboys (1-1) and the Baltimore Ravens (0-2) this Sunday alongside his broadcast partner and play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt.
