Construction work is wrapping up on one project at the east mixmaster in Des Moines, but it will require shutting down part of the interstate overnight.

Westbound Interstate 80 will close to traffic at U.S. Highway 65 near Altoona from 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17. It will close again from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.

When traffic reopens on Wednesday, drivers traveling north through the mixmaster will start using the new ramp from westbound I-80 to Interstate 35.

What's the detour for I-80 construction near Altoona?

Drivers will exit I-80 at the U.S. 65 interchange, turn on Hubbell Avenue and then Euclid Avenue before merging on to Interstate 235. From there drivers will be able to use the east mixmaster to return to I-80/35 to travel west or south or I-35 northbound.

The Iowa DOT also reminds drivers to be cautious around construction areas and obey the posted speed limit.
