"There was a fire in the building this morning. We will be closed today and for the foreseeable future. We don't know the extent of the damage and will keep you all informed as we find out more. Everyone is safe," Sub Rosa posted.

Richmond fire and police responded at 6:42 a.m. to a report of a structure fire in the 600 block of N. 25th St. Sunday morning.

"There was a fire in the attic that was starting to spread into the apartments above the bakery. All occupants in both bakery and apartments did evacuate. No injuries reported.

"Significant damage was done to the bakery and apartments and neither will be occupied for awhile. RFD cleared the scene and turned the building back over to owner," Taylor Fuqua, a spokesperson for Richmond Fire, said.

Sub Rosa is a James Beard nominated bakery owned by siblings Evrim and Evin Dogu at 620 N. 25th St.

The bakery regularly draws lines on the weekends for its breads, croissants and pastries. It opened in 2012 and is located in a 100-year-old building in Church Hill. Sub Rosa suffered another fire in 2013, afterwards the community pitched in for a fundraising campaign.

Sub Rosa specializes in stone-milling its own grain for flour and baking in a wood-fired oven. Sub Rosa was a semi-finalist for Outstanding Baker for the James Beard awards from 2017 to 2020.

These September 1984 photos show Weiman's Bakery once located at 127 N. 17th Street. The bakery was opened in 1945 by Jacob Weiman and eventually taken over by his son and grandson Morton and Allen.

The bakery produced thousands of pounds of baked goods each month -- at its peak, Weiman said they turned out nearly 120,000 pounds a month. Over the years the bakery supplied grocery stores, some brand-name bread dealers and local restaurants.

The bakery closed in February 2013.
