The Broomfield Police Department is on its way to having new facilities.
Architects who are planning the county's new police department gave an update about the new facilities at Tuesday night's Broomfield City Council study session. The new building is expected to cost about $72.7 million, based on information presented at the meeting for a 85,000-square-foot building at $856 per square foot.
Chief of Police Enea Hempelmann said that the current main police building has 207 employees, many of whom share offices or have small cubicles built into existing spaces. The current building is about 35,000 square feet.
The future building is planned to be built at the corner of Third Street and Descombes Drive. Architects suggested that the new facilities should be around 85,000 square feet to handle growth over the next 25 years.
Costs for the construction of the building are estimated at $856 per square foot, which James Taylor of Anderson Mason Dale Architects said is on par with national averages.
"It sounds like a big number but it's highly justified and certainly efficient," he said.
The new facility is currently in the project design phase. Permitting is expected in January 2026, with actual construction expected to begin in the spring of 2026.
In addition to a new building for police, Broomfield officials plan to expand and remodel the current building to serve as a courthouse. Design for that project is expected to begin in 2026.
