See St. Joseph: Pop legends, fine art and South Side pride

Sep. 19 -- This weekend, St. Joseph residents will have their pick of fine art presentations, musical performances and annual festivals. This week's edition of See St. Joseph features pop music icons, award-winning instrumentalists and the South Side Fall Festival.

The weekend will start a little early on Thursday with Lisa McClowry's portrayal of the Queen of Pop, Cher, in the musical performance, "The Beat Goes On."

The Performing Arts Association presents the one-woman-broadway-style show featuring McClowry's portrayal of Cher from her singing, speaking voice, the walk, the talk and the costumes. McClowry will leave the audience feeling they saw the pop legend live and in person. The performance will feature Cher's most famous hits spanning from the '60s to today. The performance begins 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Missouri Theatre. To purchase tickets, visit www.paastjo.org.

Missouri Western will also present a live musical performance, but rather than iconic pop music, they will feature nationally award-winning talent. "Instrumental Impressions" will feature a Grammy-winning instrumentalist, composers and conductors, but also Missouri Western students as well as local high school band students. The concert begins 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Missouri Theatre. Middle and high school instrumentalists can get in free while others can buy tickets online at fcbb.net.

While St. Joseph rests right next to the Missouri River, how many residents can say they have taken the time to truly appreciate its beauty and depth? The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art would like to introduce the community to two people who have dedicated their lives to capturing that beauty.

"From the Canoe: Steve Snell" and "Draw Closer: Ruthie Ingram" explore Snell's solo trip along the entire length of the Missouri River as well as Ingram's connection to nature and its living creatures. The opening ceremony for these two temporary exhibits goes from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.

The South Side Fall Festival will return for its 35th year with the theme of "Fabulous Fifties." There will be dozens of vendors, crafts and live entertainment. The festival begins noon on Friday and goes until 4 p.m. Sunday, with fireworks starting 9:15 p.m. Friday at Hyde Park. The parade will begin at Green Hills grocery at 10 a.m. and travel down King Hill Avenue and end at Missouri Avenue.

There's so much going on you don't want to miss this weekend, but with dedication and good timing, St. Joseph residents may be able to see it all. Tune in to News-Press NOW every Thursday for more See St. Joseph.
