CCSO and Smithfield Fire personnel save man from potential drowning

The Cache County Sheriff's Office and the Smithfield Fire Department rescued a potential drowning victim, Friday around 4 p.m.

According to CCSO Lt. Tim Ramirez, the victim's dog had fallen through the ice in the ponds just south of Presto Products in Lewiston, when he attempted to rescue it, becoming trapped in the water.

The man's children called 9-1-1 and detailed what was happening until someone else arrived.

Lt. Ramirez wrote, "Through a coordinated team effort, responders broke through the ice to reach the victim. In a remarkable display of bravery, one of our deputies, equipped with a life vest and a hatchet, entered the icy water and broke his way through the ice toward the victim.

"Shortly afterward, Smithfield Fire personnel followed behind the deputy. As the deputy reached the victim, the individual slipped underwater. Together, they successfully rescued the man and brought him to safety."

Ramirez reported, as of 5:54 p.m. Friday, the victim was in the hospital receiving medical care for cold exposure. The deputy who entered the water is also being evaluated "as a precaution."

"This incident highlights the courage and dedication of our deputies, Smithfield Fire personnel, Lewiston first responders, and the exceptional collaboration between our agencies," Ramirez concluded.
