Just recently, Qualcomm announced its new flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The chipset has since found its way into several handsets, but before you get too excited, it should be noted that the chipset could potentially cause some overheating issues. This is based on tests that found that the Snapdragon 8 Elite runs pretty hot.
According to tests conducted by Android Authority on the Realme GT7 Pro, one of the first few handsets to use the new chipset, they found that the handset got rather warm. During benchmarks for the GPU, the phone crashed several times. It also seemed to get uncomfortably hot during a stress test involving 3DMark.
That being said, should you be alarmed by this, especially if you are planning on buying a flagship phone in 2025? Yes and no. Obviously the new Snapdragon 8 Elite is a powerful chipset. Qualcomm pretty much ditched the use of the efficiency cores for performance cores, going all out on power.
But at the same time, it is possible that with better software optimization, it could allow the phone to maybe reign in the power of the chipset or make it run more efficiently. For those who don't really game too much or run too many intense applications, this shouldn't be an issue. For those who do game a lot, these tests do suggest that things could get quite hot if you do plan to get a Snapdragon 8 Elite handset.
Hopefully Qualcomm and phone OEMs are aware of this and are working on something to mitigate any overheating issues.
