In the second quarter of Saturday's Big Ten game vs. Nebraska, the Ohio State freshman wide receiver connected with Will Howard for a wide-open 60-yard touchdown to put the Buckeyes up 14-3.
With his eighth reception touchdown of the season, Smith has now tied former Buckeyes wide receiver Cris Carter's record for most receiving touchdowns by an Ohio State true freshman wideout, per ESPN's Jake Totter.
Smith finished with two receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown in the first 30 minutes of action inside Ohio Stadium on the afternoon. It is his ninth total touchdown on the season, as he scored on a jet sweep run against Michigan State on Sept. 28.
But that isn't the only record that Smith set with his touchdown on Saturday.
As shown on Fox's broadcast, the 6-foot-3 wide receiver has now scored a receiving touchdown in each of Ohio State's seven games this season. He is the first FBS freshman to reach this mark since South Carolina's Sidney Rice in 2005.
With his 65 receiving yards in the first half vs. the Cornhuskers, Smith now has 618 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns on the season on 34 receptions. He is now seven receptions away from tying Carter's 1984 record for most receptions from a true freshman in program history.
At the time of this article, Ohio State currently leads Nebraska 14-6 at halftime. With a win against the Cornhuskers, the Buckeyes will keep their Big Ten championship game and College Football Playoff hopes alive heading into next week's game at No. 3 Penn State.
