Vehicle crashes into Lexington apartment building

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - One person was taken to the hospital after a vehicle crashed into an apartment building Wednesday morning.

Lexington police say the person suffered a medical emergency.

The crash happened just before 9:00 a.m. at the Calloway Apartments on Camelot Drive.

Lexington fire crews say the damaged unit was vacant. A family of six, living above the unit, had to be temporarily moved due to the crash.

Firefighters used shoring equipment to secure the damage before turning the property over to building maintenance. Officials say the building owner will determine if the family can return to their unit, or be moved to another apartment.

District Chief Zach Ferguson says while this type of incident is less common, it is something they train for.

"These are events we don't deal with all the time, but when they happen they are risky events," said Ferguson. "We have seen an increase in them in the last several years, so having that extra training, that technical training, the specialized training really prepares our members to be able to deal with whatever they face".
