4 found dead in New Hampshire of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning

WAKEFIELD, N.H. -- State officials in New Hampshire are investigating after four people in Wakefield were found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

The investigation is a joint effort by New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey, Wakefield Fire Rescue Chief Todd Nason, and Wakefield Police Chief Michael Fenton, according to a press release issued by the New Hampshire Division of Fire Safety.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to 2962 Province Lake Road in Wakefield for a welfare check. When officers arrived, they found multiple people dead, according to the release. Investigators from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene to assist.

While the investigation remains active and ongoing, at this time, investigators said they believe the victims died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials are withholding the names of the four victims, all adults, until their families have been notified.

Autopsies are scheduled to be done by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Thursday to confirm the cause and manner of death for each of the victims.

Officials emphasized the importance of people having working carbon monoxide alarms in their homes.

"In the event of an alarm activation, residents should immediately exit their homes and call 9-1-1," the release stated. "Anyone with questions about home fire and carbon monoxide safety should contact their local fire department or the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office."

Officials say anyone who may have information that could assist in the investigation should contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office at 603-223-4289 or [email protected].
