ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- Beginning in 2025, school districts in Illinois will have to make a slight adjustment for their students' schedules each week.
Each school district will be required to provide students at least 20 minutes of relaxation activities a week. These activities will be in addition to (and not in replacement of) recess.
WCIA previously reported that SB 2872 was moving to the State Capitol back in May. Governor JB Pritzker approved it in August.
Some suggested activities in the bill include mindful-based movements, yoga, stretching, meditation, breathing exercises, guided relaxation techniques, quiet time, walking and in-person conversation.
School districts will be able to choose how exactly the relaxation activities will be implemented, such as in a P.E. class, an advisory class, or creating a new class. School districts also have the option to partner with a public or private organization to help provide the activities to students.
The new requirement for school districts officially takes effect Jan. 1, 2025. For a full list of laws beginning in the new year, click here.
