9-year-old critical after falling through thin ice in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A 9-year-old Fort Wayne boy is in critical condition after falling through thin ice.

According to a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, around 12:25 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, the Allen County Sheriff's Department received a call about a child who had fell through thin ice in the 1100 block of Mayrock Drive, which is north of State Road 14 on the east side of Fort Wayne.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two friends, a 9-year-old and an 8-year-old, were playing near a neighborhood pond when the 9-year-old fell through the ice. The 8-year-old reportedly attempted to help his friend when he also fell through the ice.

Police say the 8-year-old was able to rescue themself and went to find his friend's 39-year-old father. When the father arrived, he reportedly told police he could not find his 9-year-old son in the chest deep water.

Fort Wayne Fire Department divers reportedly were able to pull the 9-year-old from the water around 1 p.m. The 9-year-old is listed in critical condition at at Fort Wayne hospital.
