LINCOLN -- Ceyair Wright walked into the Nebraska media room and greeted a small audience of reporters. The 21-year-old with seven acting credits to his name showed no nerves in his first interview session at the podium under the lights.
That's Wright, his Husker teammates and coaches said Tuesday of the USC transfer who has emerged as a productive starting cornerback the last two weeks as Tommi Hill battles through a foot injury. No moment too big for the 21-year-old Los Angles native who appeared in a movie as the son of LeBron James a few years ago.
"He's got that laid-back swag -- he do," defensive coordinator Tony White said. "He also was on Space Jam so he'll let you know. He'll let you know quick."
Wright passed a condensed football audition of sorts with Nebraska, earning a spot on the depth chart into the season after committing out of the portal in late June. In steady action the last two weeks -- including his first Husker start at Purdue -- he's totaled 11 tackles and a pair of pass breakups.
Wright, speaking for a few minutes before heading to class, said the culture and people have made his transition easy from being a 15-game starter with the Trojans to a new system and standard in Lincoln. He and his position coach, John Butler, arrived on the same day and have meshed well in a few months.
Quarterback Dylan Raiola said Wright "can do anything you ask him to do" from covering deep balls to jumping routes and playing zone. White said the corner is "damn close" to earning a Blackshirt with how well he's performing. He made get another extended look Saturday against Rutgers with Hill a game-time decision again based on pain tolerance.
The junior corner is locked into football, taking a break from acting to focus on his on-field craft. Not that he has many cinematic options right now anyway.
"I mean, I'm in Nebraska -- I ain't going to be filming nothing out here, for real," Wright said with a wide smile. "Slim pickin's, for sure."
