The anticipation for the upcoming film, F1, is building as we edge closer to its release date of 25 June 2025. During Saturday's press conference with Christian Horner, Zak Brown, and Oliver Oakes, the three team chiefs were asked for their opinions on what to expect from the Hollywood unveiling.
McLaren Racing CEO Brown drew parallels to Top Gun, the prequel to Top Gun: Maverick, which shares its director, Joseph Kosinski, with the upcoming Formula 1-based film.
"I think it's gonna create a lot more exposure for Formula One. I think back to Top Gun and everyone wanted to be a fighter pilot and Tom Cruise after you watched Top Gun, and I think that'll be the case with Brad Pitt and going motor racing," Brown stated. "So I think it will bring in some more fans, continue to bring in a more diverse fan base, a younger fan base. I think it'll be great exposure for our sport."
Red Bull team principal Horner is excited to see F1 "on the big screen."
"Yeah, I mean, it's truly exciting. I mean, Jerry Bruckheimer just produces great movies and I think this movie, from what we've seen so far, is really exciting," Horner said. "I mean it puts Formula One on the big screen, and of course the way that they've played out the story interacts with the last couple of years of racing on track."
He continued, discussing the production's marketing potential:
"So in terms of the value add that it brings the sport - to our partners, to the brands associated with Formula One -- it puts it in front of yet another audience. And I'm sure the storyline will fit all categories, but I think in terms of exposure for Formula One, it's outstanding. I'm looking forward to seeing it released, I think, in the summer of this year."
Oakes, team principal of Alpine, kept it short:
"Yeah, I think it's exciting for F1. I think a whole new audience will potentially get hooked on the sport, and I think you only have to see at the launch in London - as soon as they put a snippet on the screen, everybody was sort of excited, looking when it was coming out. So yeah, looking forward to it."
The film, simply titled F1, sees an unparalleled level of collaboration between Hollywood and the sport. The film crew shot within race weekends over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, adding a fictional eleventh team to the grid. Starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris and with Lewis Hamilton heavily involved in the making of it, there's plenty to look forward to on its release.
